The Power of Kind Words

Have you ever been told something so horrific or rude that it just ruined your whole day—maybe your whole week? Or do you have that one thing that someone said on the playground in third grade that still eats at you to this day?

Words have power.

Okay, how about we look at Malden, Washington. A city that was devastatingly destroyed by a forest fire in September 2020.

Do you know what started this city-wide fire that took 120 homes, 8 commercial buildings, and 94 other structures? A tree branch that fell on a power line. That started a fire within the brush underneath. And, well, you can see what happened after.

A tree branch falling may seem like such a small thing, but it left 120 families without a home.

James 3:5-6 says,

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

And the tongue is a fire”

The power my words have can devastatingly destroy. This means that I should be watching my words all the time. I mean if this is true—my words can start a forest fire—then I am going to think about every single word before I say it!

Even then, I think I would still fail.

But, let’s read on.

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

James 3:17

Let’s gain wisdom this month! (James 1:5) Let’s be intentional to get our daughters and sons—and probably even ourselves—speaking words of life.
