Hey True Girl Dads!
It's about time we offered some tips to you! We imagine you have just a few questions about your tween daughter, like "what is going on inside her head?” In this blog series, Bob Gresh, author of 8 Great Dates for Dads and Daughters will answer some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from Dads.
How can I simply make conversation with my daughter? I don’t know what to talk about.
Sometimes it does seem like girls do speak a different language. Many fathers have been clueless at times too! Have you ever said something to your princess that evokes sudden anger or a waterfall of tears? You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? What did I say wrong this time?
Even if she tries to shut you out or “doesn’t want to talk to dad about it,” there are tried and true ways to make conversation with your daughter that often opens up the door to her heart.
It’s that inner child thing. Stop and try to remember what it was like to be her age. Consider the things you loved, the things you hated, the things you cared about. It really isn’t probably all that far off.
As men, it really is amazing some of the things we put to memory. You probably know the stats for your favorite sports team. Countless song lyrics. Random facts about technology. Stock numbers… Study your daughter - know her like you know your favorite team; after all she is far more important to you, right?
Think of it this way: you should date your daughter. If you're still stumped, check out 8 Great Dates for Dads and Daughters to get started! What questions would you ask on a regular date? Do you know her teacher’s name? Who in her class has a “boyfriend”? Why she dislikes PE so much? What’s her favorite song? If you can’t answer all of those questions confidently, you’ve got plenty to talk about! The time that she actually will want to spend talking to you will all-too-quickly come to a close. Don't take that time for granted - start with these:
- Who is your best friend? Why? What do you like about him/her?
- What is your biggest goal this year? How can I support you?
- What is your favorite meal?
- What makes you worry?
- If someone gave you $50, how would you spend it?
- What would you like to do when you grow up?
- What is your favorite activity we do together?
- What makes you feel loved?
- What is your dream vacation destination?
- Who do you consider to be your hero and why?
