Hey True Girl Dad!

It's about time we offered some tips to you! We imagine you have just a few questions about your tween daughter, like "what is going on inside her head?” In this blog series, Bob Gresh, author of 8 Great Dates for Dads and Daughters will answer some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from Dads.

How can I simply make conversation with my daughter? I don’t know what to talk about.

Sometimes it seems like girls do speak a different language. Have you ever said something to your daughter that evokes sudden anger or a waterfall of tears?  You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? What did I say wrong this time?

Even if she tries to shut you out or “doesn’t want to talk to dad about it,” there are tried and true ways to make conversation with your daughter that often open up the door to her heart.

As men, it really is amazing some of the things we put to memory. You probably know the stats for your favorite sports team. Countless song lyrics. Random facts about technology. Stock numbers. So, study your daughter - know her like you know your favorite team; after all she is far more important to you, right?

Here are ten questions to get you started as you get to know her.

  • Who is your best friend? Why? What do you like about him/her?
  • What is your biggest goal this year? How can I support you?
  • What is your favorite meal?
  • What makes you worry?
  • If someone gave you $50, how would you spend it?
  • What would you like to do when you grow up?
  • What is your favorite activity we do together?
  • What makes you feel loved?
  • What is your dream vacation destination?
  • Who do you consider to be your hero and why?

If you're still stumped, check out 8 Great Dates for Dads and Daughters to get your conversation started in the right direction!
