Hey True Girl Dads!
It's about time we offered some tips to you! We imagine you have just a few questions about your tween daughter, like “What's going on in her head?” In this blog series, Bob Gresh, author of 8 Great Dates for Dads and Daughters will answer some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from Dads.
What kind of man does my daughter need to marry one day?
Would you just let any sweaty, hormonal boy take your Ferrari out for a spin? Unlikely. We will be trusting some boy with something far more valuable than that – our daughter. While it is not your job to arrange a marriage, Dads play a pivotal role in the selection of a life-long mate for their girls.
First consider that you need to be the kind of man she’s looking for one day.
The way that you talk to her, treat her, bless her, and love her mother will set the bar – either high or low – for her future expectations.
Pastor and fellow father of a daughter, Voddie Baucham Jr. wrote a book entitled What He Must Be…If He Wants To Marry My Daughter. This compelling book uses God’s word to create a standard for any man who desires to be a Christian husband and father someday. Not only is this book helpful in encouraging our daughters what to look for, it calls us up as men and helps us teach our sons how to rise to the occasion. Baucham states the following in his book:
“For instance, he must be a Christian (2 Corinthians 6:14); he must be committed to biblical headship (Ephesians 5:23ff.); he must welcome children (Psalm 127:3-5); he must be a suitable priest (Joshua 24:15), prophet (Ephesians 6:4), protector (Nehemiah 4:13-14), and provider (1 Timothy 5:8; Titus 2:5). A man who does not possess — or at least show strong signs of — these and other basic characteristics does not meet the basic job description laid down for husbands in the Bible.”
Secondly, she needs to marry a man who will love her like Christ loved the church.
Marriage is essentially a picture of the gospel. When we allow the devil to come in and destroy the marriage relationship, we allow him to taint the gospel of love and grace we are trying to live out. A man who is a believer, willing to inconvenience himself for her; a man who knows the Word of God and applies it to his life; is willing to protect his purity and your daughter’s purity, and a man who knows how and desires to work is a pretty good contender. High call? You bet. Nothing but the best for our girls.
